Creativity VS Rules by Sundari Venkatraman

<<Why write?

Author-itative tips on writing, publishing, marketing

2. Creativity VS Rules

People will tell you there are a number of rules to follow while writing. It could be about how a story should be written only from a protagonist’s view point, it should have a perfect introduction, characters should be brought into the picture at exact points, the story should flow smoothly, you should stick to your genre, the conflict should be perfect, the correct amount of dialogue against narration, first person story or third person story...

You get the drift!

But creativity does not work that way. If you keep concentrating on the rules, your story will probably escape from the window. I would say, just go with the flow. Let your fiction flow along with your imagination and put everything into words. When you open your imagination, you will see your story in pictures. Just follow what your characters tell you and write the scenes and dialogues. This will form the best possible story you can write and believe me when I tell you that your readers will enjoy reading such stories. If you keep stopping in the middle of your writing to keep checking for rules, you will probably blow the death knell on your creativity. The flow will be obstructed for all you know.

There are beta readers and editors or it could be even you when you give your story a proper reading after you complete it, to adapt all the rules and make necessary changes. Rules don’t have a role to play when you are creating your first draft. They will only curtail your creativity. Do not forget this important point when you begin to pen your bestseller.

A piece of fiction is written because it’s waiting to burst forth from within you and you might just die if you aren’t able to put it into words. Don’t break the flow while you think about the rules. Keep this in mind and you are sure to write a winner.

Book Promotion and Authors' interaction organised by Story Mirror- covered by Janaki Nagaraj

In conversation- Bibhu Datta, Manisha Bhatia and Neelab Pratap Singh
Story Mirror organized a Book Promotion cum Authors' interaction event at Title Waves, Bandra, Mumbai on the 26th on November.

Manisha Bhatia, the author of the book "When my Father Cried" and Neelab Pratap Singh, the author of the book "The Resurrection of Evil" were in the spotlight. The audience got an opportunity to interact with these upcoming and bright authors.

Bibhu Datta Rout, the author of the best selling book - Wheels of Wish, who is also the CEO and co-founder of Story Mirror along with renowned Hindi Author Suraj Prakash also graced and moderated this event.

All these writers shared  with the audience their journey of  novel- writing gave them and tips and suggestions on how to go about it.

Manisha said, "A well known author had told me that the only way to finish writing a novel is to be disciplined about it." So Manisha quit her job and for six months she was at home, writing her novel diligently, locked up in her room much to the chagrin of her parents. She was sure of how her characters were going to be and she just went with the flow of writing until she felt bereft of words. She also shared that many of her friends and acquaintances advised her to change the title of her book, which according to them was a bit unusual. But she went ahead with what she believed in and today her book is well received. She is getting very good reviews for her novel.

Neelab Pratap Singh, an engineer by profession, stressed on the importance of research. It was while reading something online that he got an idea of writing the novel and it was his extensive research that brought authenticity to his story. He also agreed with Manisha that it was only through disciplined writing that anyone can complete writing a story/book. He said he was an ardent fan of Bollywood movies and he wanted to write an entertaining and thrilling story. And he seems to have done a job out of it.

It was a great event with some interesting interactions and good insights being shared, both about writing and publishing.

About the author

Veronica Thatcher is an exciting new contemporary romance author. Ever since she was very young, she’s dreamed of becoming a doctor when she grew up. While still forging ahead with that, majoring in pre-med in college, she unwittingly stumbled upon a new dream—becoming a published author. Some may call her an introvert or a wallflower, but she has always found she could express herself better in written, rather than spoken, words. However, never in her wildest dreams had she envisioned she would pursue writing as a prospective career, not just a hobby. Her love for writing goes hand-in-hand with her love for a good romance novel—whether it be a feel-good, sweet romance or a dark, suspenseful one.

When she’s not studying, reading, or writing, she is usually found blasting her favourite songs, sometimes singing and dancing along to them. She dabbles in a number of activities, including painting, karate, singing and dancing. She is a huge chocoholic – probably the biggest – and she is an ice-cream junkie too. She considers herself technologically handicapped forever and has no shame in admitting that. She also deems chocolates her boyfriend, Patrick Dempsey the love of her life, and Friends her life!

Her first book, A Way Back Into Love, is slated for release in February 2017, and she hopes readers will enjoy it as much as she enjoyed writing it.

Hot romance author, P.G. Van, decodes romantic relationships!

P.G. Van, author of 'The Evil Twin?'
In a romantic relationship is platonic love a possibility or is it just a Utopian belief? Yes or no and why?

Love is very real and yet very different at every stage and a couple has different ways of nurturing their love for each other. It takes some special effort to keep the romance in the relationship and there are many ways to keep it going. The emotional connection is critical for a relationship to build, but a couple needs the physical connection for their relationship to thrive.  A couple can still have the intimacy without being physically involved, but the primal need for each other will consume them sooner or later. On the other hand, there are so many couples in love and have a platonic relationship for many reasons and their love is no less fierce and it makes their relationship that much more exciting as they grow closer.

Love between a couple grows everyday, but it gets to a point where the guy is not able to stop and pick up flowers for his girl or the girl is so exhausted she doesn't feel like squeezing into the figure hugging dress and sexy pumps that her man loves, and at those stages in a relationship, the physical intimacy takes away the strain from the external factors. All they would need to do is chill in their pajamas and make it a special evening at home.

Platonic love is real and I feel its the purest form of love. It's what you feel for your first love, there is absolutely no physical need involved and yet, it is very strong and unbounded. We all experience what is usually termed as 'puppy love' and it is deep and lasting. I strongly feel our first experience with love defines how we handle our relationship with the one you love. I smile every time I think about my first crush because of the silliness and the ridiculous blushing, for no reason.

To answer your question, I can't say yes or no because it depends on who you ask, if you ask the teenage me I would say 'yes' and if you ask the adult me I may lean toward a 'no' and I hope you see why I am torn.
